Soli put the cat amongst the pigeons in this article in The Times last week. Anna Shepard explored why more women are behind ethical enterprise, compared to the gender inbalance in traditional business. As the 2008 winner of the Ethical Businesswomen of the Year award, Soli had this to say...

“We need to be recognised not because we are female or ethical but because we are darned good at business.” And, lest the lofty ambitions of ethical businesswomen were in doubt, she added: “Don’t just put me in The Ecologist. I want to be on the front of Fortune.”

Hell yeah.

Last night saw the first ever Green 500 Awards, the gong-giving for London's pioneering programme that helps businesses cut carbon for which Futerra is the PR and Marketing partner. At a rip-roaring event at Chelsea Football Club, very well-attended despite the best efforts of the RMT to create a significant travel obstacle, the Mayor Boris Johnson set an exemplary trend as he arrived by bike to present the awards to the deserving winners. Futerra's very own Ed compered the award-giving ceremony, winning praise for keeping the pace up and avoiding the pitfalls of long-drawn out award ceremonies where everyone just wants to get on with the drinking and networking.

The scheme has now delivered 120,000 tonnes of carbon savings, which is a great start but with a lot of work still to do - and this is the collective challenge of the Green 500 scheme. Notable winners included our good buddies at National Magazine Company, who achieved 19% energy savings last year and got a Platinum Award for their efforts and the good burghers of Addison Lee who were the overall winners on the night attaining both a Diamond Award and the London Leader Award. Onwards and upwards!

This was the first swish to concentrate solely on accessories, and it was a resounding success!

Swishers were encouraged to bring at least three accessories (belts, jewellery, sunglasses, bracelets, necklaces, scarves, hats, shoes, handbags, etc.) or clothing if they didn’t have any accessories they wanted to part with!

Accessories swished included Vivienne Westwood jewellery, vintage tea dresses, leather boots and bags (many with the tags still attached) and vintage costume jewelry.

Swishers experienced a plethora of activities from a fashion sins confessional booth, entertainment by Rodeo Massacre, and of course, swishing! All of the unswished clothing and accessories at the end of the event went to Cancer Research, who took away numerous bags of goodies, which will be sold in Cancer Research UK shops.

Our own Lucy Shea, the founder of swishing said “With the recession starting to bite, swishing is a great example of the ‘new austerity’: save money, save the planet, have a party. We are thrilled with the success of the event and are in the process of planning more fabulous swishing parties for the coming year, so be sure to visit our website www.swishing.org to find out about our upcoming events”.

In those days Fair Trade tea seemed fairly subversive so we'll be putting our creative thinking cassocks on to come up with some new ways to offer absolution through action, update the timeless, classic website (ahem) and dress up as priests and nuns obviously. Have you sinned?!

Read previous articles about the Booth in the Times and online.

Swishing began when a group of Futerrans put their heads together to find a way to combine a love of retail shopping without contributing to increased consumption. The rest as they say is history... Today swishing is a global phenomenon, thanks to the ever growing swishing community. Recent press coverage has extended to Ireland, Scotland, China, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Qatar!

Futerra’s Top 10 Tips for a Fabulous Swishing Party (Check out the online events calendar for an event near you - there are currently 39 listed!)

1. If you are aiming to host a large swishing event, in addition to listing it on www.swishing.org, use social media (Facebook, Myspace, Twitter) to invite people from your extended networks. When posting your event, ensure that you have listed full details of the time and location and include a map of the area so that guests can find your event easily. Have guests confirm via email so that you have an idea of how many guests to expect

2. Preparation is key. Ensure that you have all of the materials that you will need to display the goods. Clothes racks are essential for keeping clothing neat and tidy and tables with felt cloths are great for displaying handbags and accessories. Shoe racks help prevent clutter and ensure that shoes stay paired

3. Sort the items by type. Dresses and skirts on one rack, camisoles and blouses on another and trousers and dress pants on a separate rack so that guests can find what they’re looking for with ease

4. Alcohol, nibbles and laughter go a long way. The combination of the three is superb

5. Create a sense of drama. Soft lighting and fairy lights make a room look instantly glamorous. Full length mirrors dispersed throughout the venue make a room look larger and are perfect for guests to check out their new treasures

6. The busiest time of the swish is when the swish opens and the guests pour in armed with goodies. Ensure that you will have enough people present to receive the goods, sort the items and explain to people the rules of the swish, etc.

7. Swishing is kind of like karma for clothes. Bring something fabulous and thou shalt receive something fabulous in return.

8. Ensure that you follow the rules of the rail. Visit www.swishing.org for details.

9. Relax and remember that swishing is supposed to be a fun, non-stressful event for people to get together and share their love of fashion and the environment

10. At the end of the swish, bag up the unwanted items and donate to a local charity. You will be contributing to a good cause and will help prevent them going to a landfill.

Futerra's Ed is currently making another Futerran foray into Scandinavia...although typically he's done it Ed-style by slow travelling there and back, a mere 36 hour journey in each direction which we're sure he'll be blogging about soon (he's already 'Twittered' about his arrival...something about brown cheese) on www.lowcarbontravel.com. Ed's in Kristiansand as a guest of Norwegian agency Dale+Bang who are hosting a day-long workshop (details here if your Norwegian is up to it) on sustainability communications for representatives of local and regional government and businesses. Ed's there to share some Futerran expertise as a seasoned old warhorse of sustainability communications. It's seasonally unsurrising to note that it's also -3 and 'quite snowy', though needless to say, unlike in the good old UK, life seems to be continuing almost as normal!
