Australia or bust…Posted by ed in blog July 6, 2012
Just a wee bit of mischief making for a Friday afternoon…as folk will no doubt be oh-so-well-aware that BP is an Olympics ‘Sustainability Partner’ (a stance much lampooned and lambasted). Well when Olympics tickets started to arrive on the desk of various Futerrans last week my colleague Dave pointed out the world record breaking carbon offsetting attempt in which BP are magnanimously offering to offset spectator’s carbon emissions for free…
According to the ‘Spectator Carbon Neutral’ website this will mean BP offsetting 400,000 tonnes of CO2. So far so good (let’s not nitpick about the fact that BP’s own direct – i.e. operational only, not including their products impacts (!) – carbon emissions were 61.8M tonnes in 2011 alone).
So with BP very generously offering to offset the carbon from travel for every single one of the games spectators there’s an opportunity for a little fun here. There are 9.5M tickets for the Olympics and Paralympics combined. If everyone comes from the UK, this makes 21kg (BP’s estimate for carbon impact of a UK return trip to the Games) x 9.5M = 199,500 tonnes. Now obviously many folk will be travelling from abroad, hence BP’s 400,000 tonne record-breaking but not particularly stretching target.
So if everyone who has a ticket fills in their travel origin as ‘Australia’ on the BP page here, then this would mean BP potentially offsetting rather more carbon – 9.5M x 11,453kg = 108, 803, 500 tonnes to be precise! (or well over 200 times their official world-record breaking target…and actually offsetting ALL of their direct emissions to boot)
Of course there’s some weaselly T’s & C’s that mitigate BP’s commitment to actually doing so (this could get very pricey for them – at a ball-park £10/tonne it could be £1B!) should this actually happen…but I think we should all still have a go…

So, you think BP’s Ts and Cs for its offset scheme are more weaselly than encouraging people to lie about their travel in an attempt to defraud the scheme, huh?
