Changing the conversation

Marching, blogging, playing frisbee…next week’s where it’s at. Just don’t do it on your own.

First there’s the 100 year anniversary of the Suffragettes’ rush on parliament on Monday which is being re-enacted by members of the Wise Women network but with a slight twist. They’re planning a Climate Rush to call on politicians to take immediate action on climate change. In their own words… “They [the suffragettes] fought for Women's Right's, we fight for our Planet's Rights.” I’ll be joining them. I just need to rustle up some period costume before then.

From the outdoor rally to the online campaign, Wednesday brings Blog Action Day 2008. The call’s out for bloggers worldwide to devote their daily blog on 15 October 2008 to the discussion of poverty issues. Last year 20,000 bloggers (just like you and me) wrote about the vital issue of the world’s environmental challenges. This year’s promo film points out we spend an average of 167 minutes a day talking (in Futerra’s case it’s probably a whole lot more), but about what? They’re asking us, for one day, to change the conversation, discuss poverty from our own unique viewpoints, look for solutions no matter how small, and work out how everyone can make a difference.

As every Futerran knows, one of our ten rules of sustainable development communications is to ‘belong’. Hundreds of women, marching on parliament, demanding action on climate change, and thousands of voices, uniting on one day, writing on one issue, that’s what I call joining massive worldwide changes, starting positive conformity, joining successes. So come and march or go and blog.

And my last but definitely not least favourite action… frisbee. You can’t play ultimate on your own, so come down and join the fun on Clapham Common on Saturday. You may even end up as an intern at Futerra like lucky Luke!
