I’ve been trailing Bye Bye Standby. It is a remote controled device that alows you to turn off a plug with out the hassel, stress and planning needed to flick a switch. All you need to do is press a button! Not sure about it’s eco credentials and the website could be acused of green profiteering (check it out for the lonely Polar bear on a shrinking bit of ice), but I’m loving the power at the push of a button and I haven’t had a wooden spoon from Soli in ages. I will have to find out about the embodied energy in each plug and work out how long I will have to use it to neutralise it.

To be honest the sales pitch doesn't differ much from the arguments to turn things off at the plug - but I am guessing the main advantage is the lack of hassle encountered when crawling under the sideboard to flick the switch - I have one such plug in my house that is a real pain (and comedic spectacle) for a 15 stone chap to access and this sounds like just the ticket - I will no longer be haunted by the ghostly stand-by light of the hi-fi as I go to bed...nice one!
