Walk the talk

Walk the talk

At Futerra we are experimenting with a bokashi system and a wormery from wiggly wrigglers to process our kitchen waste.

Each week I will be providing a worm update for anyone that shares my fascination with waste (another geeky tendency).

This is the third week the system has been operating. Week 1 & 2 went well. Each week we have filled one nine litre bin of food waste and the addition of bokashi has stopped any unpleasant smells and aided the decomposition process.

Week 3 and the process stalled. The worms are getting full and need a week or two to munch their way through the back log. I could have bought a second wormery but I want to see if the system worked before investing too much.

I have a sneaky suspicion that fitting the sink with a waste disposal unit may be a better option. Let Thames water deal with it. Hopefully it will end up in the incinerator at Beckton. Is this wrong?

Waste to energy makes sense to me especially if it’s all biological. The sewers are also a very effective low energy transport system and I have a feeling that with new waste charges more and more stuff is going to get flushed.
