Positive News

I had a great reminder this weekend to look for the positives around me. On Wednesday I read the 2007 IPCC report which was a stark reminder of why we are working so hard to engage the world around us with sustainability. It made scary reading.

Although their prediction for Europe were initially more favourable than for most of the rest of the world it was no real consolation and got me thinking about where in the world one could avoid the worst of the effects of the impending climate change. But then I realised that it’s called Global Warming for a reason.

So how did I break out of the funk? Well this is where I show my sad geeky side. After paying for my weekly shop at my local supermarket (I know, what was I doing in a temple to over consumption, saturated fat and plastic bags but I was lazy and we were out of bin liners and washing powder.) When I checked my receipt only half my items were listed. Then I turned the slip over and realised that it was printed on both sides. It was a small thing but the journey of a thousand steps etc.. How much paper are they saving? Did they have to upgrade all their printers?

On Sunday after walking the dog on the wonderful Wimbledon Common we stopped for a pint and I noticed that the pub was using unbleached recycled paper containers for people eating outside. Now sustainability can be a complicated thing and neither of these things is going to solve the problem but it did show that the world is changing and people are engaging. It also showed how making changes doesn't have to effect quality of life.
